James was born in St. John's, Newfoundland Labrador, Canada, and maintains his studio and home there today. He just celebrated his 25th year of marriage with his wife, Lucy. They have two children in university.
A graduate of the Ontario College of Art, he is inspired by all types of great art, past and present. Although his subject matter focuses on the sea, the core dynamics of painting and visual expression are at the heart of all of his work. Knowledge of the history of art plays an important role in his approach and philosophy of painting. The experiences and adventures of life keep him motivated in the creative process and his love for expression through the visual medium.
His paintings, drawings and prints have been exhibited in solo and group shows across North America and are collected internationally. He is currently working on a new series of seascapes which will be exhibited later this year.
